Martin Henry Balsam (November 4, 1919 – February 13, 1996)[1] was an American actor. He is known for his roles as Archie Bunker's business partner Murray Klein in the sitcom Archie Bunker's Place from 1979-1982, as Arnold Burns in A Thousand Clowns (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor) and as private investigator Milton Arbogast in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and as Juror #1 in 12 Angry Men.
Martin Balsam was born in Bronx borough of New York City to Russian-Jewish parents, Lillian (née Weinstein) and Albert Balsam, who was a manufacturer of women's sportswear.[2][3] He attended DeWitt Clinton High School, where he participated in the drama club.[2] He studied at the Dramatic Workshop of The New School in New York with the German director Erwin Piscator and then served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Martin Balsam made his professional debut in August 1941 in a production of The Play's the Thing inLocust Valley.[4] In early 1948, he was selected by Elia Kazan to be a member in the recently formedActors Studio.[5] Balsam would go on to perform in several episodes of the Studio's dramatic televisionanthology series, broadcast between September 1948 and 1950 more....... Kathleen Mary "Kathy" Griffin (born November 4, 1960) is an American actress, comedian, writer, producer, and television host. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, she moved to Los Angeles in 1978, where she studied drama at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and became a member of the improvisational comedy troupe The Groundlings. In the 1990s, Griffin began performing as a standup comedian and also appeared as a guest star on several television shows. She achieved recognition in a supporting role on the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan (1996–2000).
Her Bravo reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (2005–2010) became a ratings hit for the network and earned her two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Program. Griffin has released six comedy albums, all of which received Grammy Award nominations. Her first album, For Your Consideration (2008), made her the first female comedian to debut at the top of the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart. In 2009, she released her autobiography Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin, which topped The New York Times Best Seller list. Griffin has taped numerous standup specials with HBO and Bravo. For the latter network, she has recorded 16 specials, breaking the record for the number of specials in any network.[3] In 2011, she also became the first comedian to have four televised specials in a year. Besides her comedy career, she is an LGBT activist involved in causes such as same-sex marriage and the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell". She has also participated in two USO tours. Influenced by acts such as Joan Rivers and Don Rickles, Griffin is known for her conversational style and controversial statements on celebrities, religion and sexuality. Arthur William Matthew “Art” Carney (November 4, 1918 – November 9, 2003) was an American actor in film, stage, television and radio. He is best known for playing Ed Norton, opposite Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden in the situation comedy The Honeymooners, and for winning theAcademy Award for Best Actor for his role in Harry and Tonto.
Carney, youngest of six sons (Jack, Ned, Robert, Fred, Phil, and Art) was born in Mount Vernon, New York, the son of Helen (née Farrell) and Edward Michael Carney, who was a newspaper man and publicist.[1][2] His family was Irish American and Catholic.[3] He attended A. B. Davis High School.[4] Carney was drafted into the United States Army as an infantryman as a machine gun crewman during World War II. During the Battle of Normandy serving in the 28th Infantry Division, he was wounded in the leg by shrapnel and walked with a limp for the rest of his life. Swit is best known for her portrayal of Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on M*A*S*H, for which she won two Emmy Awards.
Born in Passaic, New Jersey, of Polish descent, Swit's parents were Lester and Nellie Szwed. She studied with Gene Frankel in Manhattan inNew York City and considered him her acting coach. She regularly returned to his studio to speak with aspiring actors throughout her career. Swit is also a singer, trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts prior to entering the theater. She graduated from Pope Pius XII High School in Passaic in 1955.
