Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich (/mɑrˈleɪnəˈdiːtrɪk/, German pronunciation: [maɐˈleːnə ˈdiːtʁɪç]; 27 December 1901 – 6 May 1992)[2] was a German-American actress and singer.
Dietrich remained popular throughout her long career by continually re-inventing herself, professionally and characteristically. In the Berlin of the 1920s, she acted on the stage and in silent films. Her performance as Lola-Lola inThe Blue Angel (1930), directed by Josef von Sternberg, brought her international fame and garnered her a contract withParamount Pictures in the US. Hollywood films such as Shanghai Express (1932) and Desire (1936) capitalised on her glamour and exotic looks, cementing her stardom and making her one of the highest-paid actresses of the era. Dietrich became a U.S. citizen in 1939,[3] and throughout World War II she was a high-profile frontline entertainer. Although she still made occasional films in the post-war years, Dietrich spent most of the 1950s to the 1970s touring the world as a successful show performer. |
Louis Pasteur (/ˈluːi pæˈstɜr/, French: [lwi pastœʁ]; December 27, 1822 – September 28, 1895) was a French chemistand microbiologist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation andpasteurization. He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and preventions of diseases, and his discoveries have saved countless lives ever since. He reduced mortality from puerperal fever, and created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax. His medical discoveries provided direct support for the germ theory of disease and its application in clinical medicine. He is best known to the general public for his invention of the technique of treating milkand wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization. He is regarded as one of the three main founders of bacteriology, together with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch, and is popularly known as the "father of microbiology".[2][3][4]

Oscar Levant (December 27, 1906 – August 14, 1972) was an American pianist, composer, author, comedian, and actor. He was as famous for his mordant character and witticisms, on the radio and in movies and television, as for his music.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, in 1906 to an orthodox Jewish family from Russia, Levant moved to New York in 1922, following the death of his father, Max. He began studyingunder Zygmunt Stojowski, a well-established piano pedagogue. In1924, ahged 18, he appeared with Ben Bernie in a short film, Ben Bernieand all the Lads, made in New York City in theDeForest Phonofilm sound-on-film system In 1928, Levant traveled to Hollywood where his career took a turn for the better. During his stay, he met and befriendedGeorge Gershwin. From 1929 to 1948 he composed the music for more than twenty movies. During this period, he also wrote or co-wrote numerous popular songs that made the Hit Parade, the most noteworthy being "Blame It on My Youth" (1934), now considered a standard.c. |
