June Havoc (November 8, 1912 – March 28, 2010)[3][4] was a Canadian-born American actress, dancer, writer, and theater director.[5]Havoc was a child vaudeville performer under the tutelage of her mother, Rose Thompson Hovick.[6] She later acted on Broadway and in Hollywood, and stage directed, both on and off-Broadway. She last appeared on television in 1990 in a story arc on the soap opera General Hospital. Her elder sister, Louise, gravitated to burlesque and became a well-known performer using the stage name Gypsy Rose Lee.
She was born as either "Ellen Evangeline Hovick" or "Ellen June Hovick" in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 1912. For many years her year of birth was given as 1916. She herself was reportedly uncertain of the year. Her mother forged various birth certificates for both her daughters to evade child labor laws.[5] Her lifelong career in show business began when she was a child, billed as "Baby June".[7] Her only full sibling, Rose Louise Hovick (1911–1970), was called "Louise" by her family members. Their parents were Rose Thompson Hovick (1890–1954) and John Olaf Hovick, a Norwegian American,[4][8] who worked as a newspaper advertising man. more...... Joseph A. "Joe" Flynn (November 8, 1924 – July 19, 1974) was an American character actor.[1] He was best known for his role in the 1960sABC television situation comedy, McHale's Navy.[2] He was also a frequent guest star on 1960s TV shows, such as Batman, and appeared in several Walt Disney film comedies. Later in his career, Flynn worked as a voice actor for Disney animated features.[2]
He was born to a physician in Youngstown, Ohio. Flynn graduated from Rayen High School there and attended for one year the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He then spent three years in the Army Medical Corps before moving west, in 1946, to pursue acting and to complete his education. He majored in political science at the University of Southern California.[3] Flynn's interest in theater was evident well before his departure from northeastern Ohio. He established himself early on as a ventriloquist and radio disc jockey. Flynn also gained local celebrity as a director by guiding the Canfield (Ohio) Players in such productions as Harvey, Antigone, and Pursuit of Happiness. Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an Anglo-Irish author, best known today for his 1897 Gothic novel, Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as the personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned.Stoker was born on 8 November 1847 at 15 Marino Crescent, Clontarf, on the northside of Dublin, Ireland.[1] His parents were Abraham Stoker (1799–1876), from Dublin, and Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornley (1818–1901), who was raised in County Sligo.[2] Stoker was the third of seven children, the eldest of whom was Sir Thornley Stoker, 1st Bt.[3] Abraham and Charlotte were members of the Church of Ireland Parish of Clontarfand attended the parish church with their children, who were baptised there.[4]Stoker was bedridden with an unknown illness until he started school at the age of seven, when he made a complete recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, "I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years." more....... Esther Elizabeth Rolle (November 8, 1920 – November 17, 1998) was an American actress. She is best known for her role as Florida Evans, on the CBS television sitcom Maude for two seasons (1972–1974) and its spin-off series Good Times for five seasons (1974–77, 1978–79).
Esther Rolle was born in Pompano Beach, Florida, to Bahamian immigrants Jonathan Rolle (1883–1953),[2] a farmer, and Elizabeth Iris Rolle (née Dames; 1893–1981).[3] Her parents were both born and raised in Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas[4][5][6] and moved to Florida some time after their marriage. She was the tenth of 18 children (children who included siblings and fellow actresses Estelle Evans and Rosanna Carter).[7] Rolle attended Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, Florida[8] and graduated from Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach. She initially studied at Spelman College in Atlanta, but she moved to New York City.[8] While in New York, she "attended Hunter College. Rolle transferred to The New School and, finally, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut."[9] For many years, Rolle worked in a traditional day job in New York City's garment district.[10] more....... |
